In the year 2012 what was supposed to have cured the world from the horrible ravages of Cancer has mutated into a virus that has eradicated mankind from the planet. Dr. Robert Neville who appears to be immune from this biological agent roams the empty streets of New York in search of a cure. The virus has changed those who remain into something far from human, and Neville is determined to reverse the effects and bring humanity back to the planet.
The film has moments of humor mixed in with moments of suspense and sadness. Neville’s abilities to cope with utter loneliness are tested as he finds himself completely alone in the world. What was once one of the greatest and largest cities in the world has now been reduced to a ghost town of skyscrapers, with a population of one.
Will Smith gives a solid performance, and the plot of the movie is strong. Anyone watching the film will be able to imagine the incredible possibility of living an existence without even one individual to interact with and the horror of being abandoned by the world. The movies weak points are its erratic movement through the plotline, as well as some poorly done CGI effects.
Some day Hollywood will realize that monsters and sci-fi characters are much better when done by make make-up artists rather than an individual behind a movie screen. The movie ends abruptly and leaves the audience feeling a bit unfulfilled, but it is definitely worth seeing.
3 ½ out of 5 stars.
