Mr. Smith Goes to Lansing

Marc Corriveau is the State Representative for Plymouth, a large portion of Northville and smaller parts of Canton and Wayne. In other words he is in Republican heaven. The average household income in Northville is about 83,000 per year. Plymouth is 96% white. Less than 2% of the families live below the poverty line. House prices are high and graduation rates are great. Mr. Corriveau is a Democrat.

Marc is a relatively young man, 2 young children at home, am ember of the Rotary Club and he coaches the hockey team of his young son. He was also a decorated Naval Reservist. He was an attorney and small business owner. He is the kind of guy you would want your sister to marry. He is also a Modern Day Mr. Smith who went to Lansing.

He gave up a very lucrative law practice in downtown Northville to make the State a better place to live. He knew that this would not be a career for him, it could not be a career for him as he is limited due to our term limit laws limiting him to no more than 6 years in the House of Representatives. So he dove into his new job at the beginning of this term head first.

He helped to bring jobs to Northville. He proposed laws punishing further drunk drivers. He sought ways to stop the predatory lending practices from mortgage companies. He is working to stop Canadian trash from crossing the border.

As we all know the government of the State of Michigan was on the verge of shutdown a few days ago. Well Marc knew that his Republican constituents were not going to swallow the bitter pill of the inevitable, a tax increase. Unfortunately he was not in a position of power until this year, he had no bearing on how money had been spent before he got to the House. Still he knew that the right thing to do was to take a pay cut and raise taxes, and he did the right thing.

See the problem here is that his decision may very well just cost him his job. People that live in million dollar homes do not love politicians in their pockets. The thing is that he did the right thing. Looking into his own political future and he did the right thing.

Our system of politics is not the best, our politicians are there for the long haul and will always, always vote for one thing, to keep their jobs. They have their hands out to lobbyists. They do not return phone calls, they do not listen to their constituents. Instead they all are just trying to keep their cushy jobs and their fat expense accounts. Marc Corriveau is not that man. He was elected to represent the good people of western Wayne County. He did the right thing and it should not cost him his job. Marc Corriveau is the very embodiment of Integrity.
